For a long time it was just unimaginable. I mean, what guy in his right mind would even entertain such a thought. There are plenty of things in God’s creation to keep you from stooping that low. Those kind of guys are just pitiful. They probably get manicures, get their hair “done”, and wear “outfits”. They certainly never did a hard days work outdoors.
No doubt about it, a real man wouldn’t even entertain the thought. We have to think about hunting, fishing, being outdoors, rescuing women and babies and such. We were taught early and often to work hard and play hard. Just rub some dirt on it. If you are sick, just work through it. We ain’t got time to feel. We have more important things to do. We have to forge a living out of this world. Be strong.
The Woman Effect
Women are such wonderful creatures. Powerfully influential in such subtle ways. Men tend to be more transparent and simple. We see our sweetheart unhappy and we can’t rest until we swoop in and make all things right again. Oh, they have us figured out alright. Eve may have been tricked but she knew how to get Adam to join in. I’m sure she gave a pouty look and Adam didn’t have a chance.
Resistance is Futile
And so it began with me. For so long, I just retreated to the back yard to do manly chores. Clean the garage. Look for that tent stake I lost last year. Reline the fishing reels. But, eventually, I couldn’t escape her power. There seems to always be that little hook. “You like James Garner don’t you?” Heck yeah! I watched The Rockford Files every week! That was a man’s show. That Firebird and Beth made a great pair. “Well, he is the star of the movie. You will love it!” Hooked!
My first time was The Notebook. I had no idea what it was about but it had James Garner in it. The plot seemed to be going down a scary path but surely Rocky would show up and we would all go fishing right? Nope.
I think I watched First Blood a few times after that just to get my “man card” back. I had voluntarily surrendered it after being tricked by Mr. Garner. But, it didn’t last. No, there was the Sisters of the Yo-Yo Club (well something like that), and a few others. Eventually, it kinda distilled down to a regular helping of the Hallmark Channel. I have found that Signed, Sealed, Delivered is more than the title of a Stevie Wonder song , it is also a TV show.
Okay, your turn, Share your confession of something you thought you would never do. Please make me feel better. Ha!
